Sberbank Leads the Charge in Advancing AI and Domestic IT Solutions in Russia
In a significant move to propel artificial intelligence (AI) development in Russia, Sberbank, alongside the Big Data Association (BDA), has unveiled a draft national standard for data synthesis. This initiative aims to overcome key obstacles in AI adoption, such as the scarcity of accessible data and the need to protect sensitive information. The standard outlines a methodology for generating synthetic data while maintaining rigorous privacy safeguards, ensuring that AI technologies can progress without compromising data security.
Kirill Menshov, Senior Vice President and Head of Technology at Sberbank, noted that a major barrier to AI implementation is the limited availability of usable data. Synthetic data is poised to play a crucial role in addressing this challenge, offering a secure and efficient alternative to traditional anonymized data. The draft standard is expected to be reviewed and approved in 2025 by the Artificial Intelligence Technical Committee for Standardization.
In parallel with these developments, a new report from SberAnalytics reveals that 82% of Russian businesses now rely on domestic Business Intelligence (BI) platforms, marking a steady increase from 77% a year earlier. The transition to local solutions comes as Russia continues to reduce its reliance on foreign IT systems. Notably, 70% of businesses expressed satisfaction with the quality of Russian software, a 7% improvement from 2024. This surge in domestic BI usage aligns with Russia's broader efforts to strengthen its technological independence.
The study, which surveyed 100 IT directors across the country, also underscores the growing emphasis on cybersecurity. As part of the ongoing push for import substitution, 36% of businesses have taken matters into their own hands by developing custom cybersecurity solutions.
Together, these initiatives reflect Russia's dual focus on fostering AI innovation and reinforcing domestic technological capabilities. Sberbank's leadership in setting data synthesis standards and driving the adoption of local IT solutions underscores the country's commitment to technological sovereignty and its readiness to compete in the global digital economy.
